Microdosing Guide
What is Microdosing?
Microdosing Psilocybin is taking very small amounts of psychedelic fungi to benefit from its physiological action while minimizing undesirable side effects. Microdosing ranges from 50 mg – 250 mg depending on each individual’s experience and physiology. Taking such small doses allows one to receive the physical, psychological and spiritual benefits of Psilocybin mushrooms while continuing daily activities without significant changes in perception.
The term ‘microdosing’ can be broken down into these three components:
1. Dose: The low-dose use of a psychedelic substance, either mushrooms, cannabis or LSD.
2. Protocol: A schedule of multiple dosing sessions, they are various protocols available.
3. Intention: The intention to improve well-being, enter flow states and enhance cognition or emotions.
Getting Started with Microdosing
If you are new to microdosing, there are a few things to know before getting started, such as the dose you’ll take and the protocol you will follow.
Dosage: Some people will feel the effects of 100 mg whilst others may need more, so finding the sweet spot for you is the first step. We recommend starting with 100mg, if you are nervous, open up and empty half a capsule.
Protocols: There are many protocols available to follow, we recommend you take the time to explore the different methods available to find the best one for your lifestyle.
Once you’ve found your sweet spot in dosage and schedule, you can confidently begin to incorporate microdosing into your daily routine, enhancing your day to day lifestyle and overall well-being.
Setting Intentions
Each person has their own set of unique challenges and difficulties, and microdosing has a special solution per individual. Whether you dose to improve your focus, be more present, increase your awareness or simply enhance your mood, it’s important to have an intention before starting you protocol. It’s also key to follow your usual daily routine while microdosing, as the whole purpose of it is to enhance your everyday life.
It’s recommended to keep a journal to track how microdosing is helping improve different aspects of your life, this will also assist in noticing differences on your dose and non-dose days.
How does Microdosing Feel?
Dose days
The effect of a microdose is subtle yet noticeable. You should be able to go about your daily routine without any impairment. It’s common for people who microdose to report the following on dose days; music sounds better, they’re more empathetic, more energetic, they pause to think before they speak, they’re more aware of their surroundings (especially nature), their focus feels sharper and they are able to stay on track.
Non-dose days
People report experiencing an afterglow the next day. The introspective effects in particular tend to draw out into the next day. Consecutive days of non-dosing will bring you back to baseline and will serve to reset any tolerance that has been built.
Microdosing Protocols
The Fadiman Protocol
The most popular protocol is the “Fadiman Protocol”. It states that a microdose should be taken once every 3 days. This protocol is based on established science regarding psilocybin’s rate of metabolism, and allows you to get the best value out of your microdose purchase.
For the vast majority of individuals, Psilocybin will be 95% metabolized and excreted within 3 days of consumption. This means that during day 2 of the Fadiman protocol you still experience the neurological benefits of psilocybin, and day 3 serves as a “control” allowing you to better quantify the changes you feel when microdosing.
A dose is taken once every 3 days
The Stamets Protocol
Paul Stamets, a well known mycologist advises users to microdose four days on and three days off. Following this protocol will allow for tolerance to reset during the non-dosing period, and also allow you to better quantify the differences you feel on dose days.
Paul Stamets is also famous for his neurogenesis stack, which is combining lions mane, Niacin, and psilocybin mushrooms. Stamets has claimed that the neurological benefits (like neurogenesis, a hyper-connected brain state, etc) are compounded by up to 3x when these substances are taken simultaneously.
Doses are taken 4 days in a row.
Every Other Day Protocol
Paul Stamets, a well known mycologist advises users to microdose four days on and three days off. Following this protocol will allow for tolerance to reset during the non-dosing period, and also allow you to better quantify the differences you feel on dose days.
Paul Stamets is also famous for his neurogenesis stack, which is combining lions mane, Niacin, and psilocybin mushrooms. Stamets has claimed that the neurological benefits (like neurogenesis, a hyper-connected brain state, etc) are compounded by up to 3x when these substances are taken simultaneously.
Doses are taken every other day.
Two Fixed Days Protocol
A challenge of the Fadiman and Every Other Day protocols is having continuously changing days of the week as microdosing days. Some people might benefit from a fixed daily schedule, where you choose two fixed weekdays (that are best for your own schedule) to microdose – for example Monday and Thursday.
Doses are taken on set days.
Intuitive Microdosing
Another way to microdose is to tune into how you are feeling at the moment and go with your flow! One thing to note is: continuing 4 days in a row will diminish the effects of the microdose as a tolerance will now have been built.
Microdosing Benefits
Psilocybin can reshape cells in the brain, including building a better-connected global network across the whole brain on top of the individually operating brain networks. This increasingly shows the potential for our brain to tap into otherwise inaccessible states, resulting in improved brain function and benefits for focus, memory, creativity, sleep pattern and athletic performance. It can help you work on mental blocks, break bad habits and aid overall balance.
Recent studies have shown that microdosing with psilocybin, preferably combined with psychotherapy, may significantly reduce symptoms for a wide range of neurology indications. From depression to migraine/cluster headaches, anxiety and various forms of addictions.
If you are dealing with conditions like this, it might be worth investigating if microdosing can alleviate your symptoms. This might create a life-changing effect and a happier and healthier version of you.
